How to Be Happy, Really

Today is Mission Monday. On Mission Mondays, I write about my imperfect understanding of God’s perfect love. I am fulfilling my mission to spread the word of God by writing about the strategies and battle plans of the Greatest Conqueror who ever lived – Jesus Christ.

God’s Word: Matthew 18:2-3

Jesus called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.”

How to Be Happy, Really

Have you seen this video of a three-year old dancing boy? Watch it! It’s worth ten minutes of your time!

For the first few minutes, it’s very cute and entertaining. How he waved to his audience was just so adorable! He even almost hit a wall! It was so hilariously cute!

But towards the end, when the boy was asked why he dances, his answer blew me away.

The boy knew something we have forgotten a long time ago: how to be happy.

The Two Secrets of Happiness

From the boy's answer, I learned that there really are only two secrets how to be happy:

1. Do what makes you happy

2. Make others happy

Do What Makes You Happy

This one is obvious. In order to be happy, you have to do the things that make you happy! Others call it "passion." Some call it their "calling."

But, to put it even simpler, doing what makes you happy means doing the things that excite you, that get your heart pumping and your adrenaline rushing!

Still do not know what makes you happy? Dig deep into your childhood and past experiences. What made you happy when you were a little kid? Try new things or go to new places! Make mistakes until you find the things that excite you! But, it should not end there.

Make Others Happy

I love video games! When I was born, I was holding a video game controller! I cannot remember a time when we did not own a video game console!

Gamers out there make a noise!

Video games really make me happy! Whenever I'm exploring new lands, vanquishing monsters, and journeying through vast deserts and mysterious forests, my heart gets pumping and my adrenaline gets rushing!

But, my happiness, my excitement, is short-lived. When my short escape from reality is over, I feel unfulfilled. No matter how many kingdoms I have conquered, enemies I have defeated, and worlds I have saved (and lovely princesses I have met), after my adventures, I feel like I accomplished nothing in my real life.

Why? Because no matter how much I mattered in my fantasy world, I was not able to make a difference in one person's life in the real world.

The lesson: play multiplayer games. Just kidding!

At the end of our lives, of our adventures here on earth, the only questions we ask are: "Did I live? Did I love? Did I matter?"

Deep and lasting happiness only comes from making even a small difference in the lives of others.

That's why no matter how much we travel, how many new things we try, and how much we achieve, if we do not make a difference in even a single person's life, our happiness will be shallow and short-lived.

Happiness is Simple

Friend, stop complicating your life. Life is simple. Happiness is simple. Do whatever it is that excites you! Travel as often as you want! Try new things in your life! Live your life like a never-ending adventure! Play video games as much as you like!

But, do not forget to love and to matter. Do not forget to make even a small difference in someone else's life. Start with the people around you — your parents, your family, your friends, and your community. Think big but start small.

Do what makes you happy and be happy TODAY. Make a difference in someone else's life and be happy FOREVER!

Learn from the three-year old kid who is happy dancing and who dances to make his mother happy! Learn from the children and enter the kingdom of heaven.

Make a difference.
