Instead of dwelling on the uncertainties and the doubts and the questions that he had, St. Joseph focused only on what the angel of the Lord commanded him. He focused only on the next step: to take Mary into his home.
What is your dream? Do you have a long-term project that you are working on — maybe launching a business or writing a book?
The most meaningful projects take time to build, or so they say. But the uncertainty, the countless days, and the sleepless nights working on them without actually seeing results can be discouraging.
They can even test our faith and our will to go on.
Today’s Gospel reading reminds us to focus only on the next step, on the thing that we can do today.
“When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.” — Matthew 1:24
The virginal conception of Jesus was probably a lot for St. Joseph to comprehend and understand. It was full of uncertainties and was probably confusing and overwhelming for him.
But instead of dwelling on the uncertainties and the doubts and the questions that he had, he focused only on what the angel of the Lord commanded him. He focused only on the next step: to take Mary into his home.
“The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.’” — Matthew 1:20
What’s your next step?
