I really love planning. Before 2014 ended, I shared with you how I annually plan for the year ahead and how I make plans for the rest of my life. In addition, I also do my monthly, weekly, and daily planning, albeit very simply compared to my annual and lifetime planing. I only prepare simple to-do lists for my monthly, weekly, and daily plans.
However, for the first five days of the year, I mostly failed to accomplish the daily goals I set. At the beginning of each new day, when I wrote down my daily to-dos, I simply carried over what I failed to accomplish the previous day — which means almost everything.
Aside from my usual laziness and procrastination (and video games, I love video games), the other culprit was that I stopped at writing down my goals. I didn't revisit or review them throughout the day. Oh, and I... also didn't act on them. I wished for them to just magically accomplish themselves!
At the end of the day, what's more important than writing down your goals is actually acting on them. In fact, it's usually better to act without planning than plan without acting. Planning doesn't move anything. Only action does.
Of course, it's still best if you plan and act at the same time.
I have a suggestion. Don't stop at writing your to-do list at the beginning of the day. Make a have-done list at the end of the day as well. Or if you're a lazy person like me, you can always just put a check mark beside each item on your to-do list. Always review your to-do list.
Lastly, keep your planning and review simple. Make more time for action.
