Give Them the Carrot

How do you make a donkey go where you want it to go?

You can use carrots.

In work, in business, and in life, we often don't give our bosses, our customers, and our families and friends what they want. We don't give the donkeys in our lives the carrots. (I don't mean that in a bad way.)

Sometimes, we think we know better than them. We want to give them a vegetable which is better and more nutritious than a carrot.

We give our bosses a report that covers everything when all they really need is a report on one aspect of the business. What a waste of time and effort. What if we simply give it to them and dig deeper into that one aspect? It would probably be more useful.

We give our customers more features and benefits when all they really want is one feature and one benefit delivered extremely well. Apple did exactly just that with its first iPhone. It focused on voice and sms, internet communication, and music when all the other phones (I'm thinking of you, Nokia) had phones which had so many features which the ordinary people like you and me didn't care to use.

Sometimes, we stress ourselves over bringing our families to a grand vacation, buying a huge house, giving our friends a great time, and planning activities for them. Sometimes, all they really want is our time, our full presence, and undivided attention.

Just give them the carrot. They don't need anything else. If you want to give them something else, give them the carrot first. Later on, you can give them everything else you want to give.

Give them what they want, not what you want to give.

Oh, and you don't make them endlessly run after the carrot. You simply give it to them. After all, they're not really donkeys.
