Finding the work you were meant to do is the central theme of Chris Guillebeau’s new book, Born for This.
Chris shares that in order to find your work, you have to have three things: Joy, Money, and Flow. Do you have all three in your current work?
Today, it’s nice to take a step back and assess whether or not you are already doing the work you were meant to do. Here are some questions you can ask yourself:
Joy: This is the measure of happiness or fulfillment you get from the work that you do. Are you passionate about what you’re doing? Do you get a sense of fulfillment doing it? Does it matter to you?
Money: You should be compensated by doing your work. Otherwise, how can you sustain doing it? It’s not about being selfish. Your work is your gift to the world. But, if your gift also sustains you, then you’ll be able to give more. Are you being compensated by doing what you’re doing?
Flow: Does your work challenge you to become better? Are you realizing your potential through your work? Short-term, it’s okay to get only joy and money from your work. But, long-term, it should also turn you into a better person. When you do not have flow, when you’re not growing through what you’re doing, your work will not be sustainable.
Do you have all three in your current work? If yes, awesome! If not, don’t give up. Don’t settle. Keep searching. Keep making mistakes. One day, you’ll find it.
