Have you ever wondered what you will leave behind when your time here on earth is up?
Sure, it’s easy to think that you will leave behind some properties and a little bit of savings for your children and their own children. Sure, it’s easy to think that you will leave behind some wonderful memories.
But, what will you leave behind for the next generation other than your own children and your grandchildren?
What we choose to leave behind for posterity is a collective choice.
We can choose to be selfish and make life better for our children and our children’s children alone. But, no amount of money or security can protect them from the ill effects of climate change, extreme poverty, the gross inequality in the distribution of resources, and a general lowering of moral standards.
And if we’re not contributing to making them better, then we’re most probably contributing to making them worse. (I’m guilty of this as well as I stand here and wait for others to take action.)
The collective may dwarf our individual efforts and actions. But no matter how insignificant they may seem, they have the power to compound over time and influence the collective. The collective is simply our individual efforts put together and our individual actions made consistently one day at a time.
