Put Yourself in the Position to Excel

Let’s face it. We all want to excel.

No, it doesn’t really matter whether you’re the best at anything. What matters is that, in everything, you are at your best.

Yet, there are probably days when you’re not putting yourself in the position to be at your best, to excel.

If you’re at your best during mornings, are you putting yourself in the position wherein you will be able to get up early? Or are you putting yourself in the position where it will be difficult (by sleeping late at night watching TV or playing video games—ouch!)?

If you’re at your best doing something else other than your day job, why are you still putting yourself in the position where you will not shine? Put yourself in the position where you will be able to give your best work.

If you’re an artist (which you are), are you putting yourself in the position where ideas would flow easily by getting inspiration from books, blogs, events, seminars, and all other sources of inspiration? Are you putting yourself in the position where you can be more creative?

Are you putting yourself in the position where you could learn by surrounding yourself with mentors?

It even applies to being a good person. Are you putting yourself in the position where you could totally avoid the temptation to sin or are you putting yourself in the position where you will be tempted? No matter how strong-willed you are to avoid sin, it's still easy to get tempted.

There’s a principle in auditing that no matter how honest a person is, if you put him in a position where there are opportunities to steal some money, he may still be tempted to do so. That’s why you don’t put him in that position. You put him in a position where he could be at his best and the best version of himself. Why not do the same for yourself?

It’s difficult to always be excellent. There are days when you can simply not be excellent. But, putting yourself in the position to excel is a choice. It’s your choice. And if you choose to put yourself in that position, it will be easier for you to be excellent on most days.

It’s really up to you.
