The very reason you're pursuing work-life balance means there's something wrong with what you're doing or how you're living. It means there's already a divide between your work and your life. It’s a cure, rather than prevention.
Also, the word "balance" sounds like a compromise. It seems that in order to have a successful career, you have to make sacrifices in your personal life, your relationships, and the things you love doing and vice-versa. It doesn't have to be that way. Work and life are not designed that way.
Instead of pursuing work-life balance, pursue wholeness. Bring your whole self to the workplace.
Bring back your emotions, your soul, your spirit, and your passion.
Bring your family and even your pet to the workplace to show that you are not just a cog in a machine, that you are also a human capable of caring and loving.
Bring your spirituality back to the workplace. In this world where ego, selfishness, and materialism are king, it's nice to be reminded of what truly matters. Of course, you should respect other religions. After all, at the center of all religions is One God and God is love. Let's focus on our similarities, not our differences.
Bring nature back to the workplace. We have been disconnected with nature for far too long and we're now facing the consequences. Being in nature keeps us grounded. It has the power of reminding us that no matter how much we achieve, they can never compare to what God created.
Bring your true self to the workplace. It's time to remove your many masks and be authentic. It's the only way to be whole in the workplace.
Also, it's time to do work that matters—to others and to you. If your work doesn't allow you to be your true self, why stick with it? Why participate in the race to the bottom—where people simply do what they're told, where it's okay to do mediocre work? You always have the choice of finding and doing work that matters to you and to others.
Better yet, create work that matters to you. You don't need anyone else's permission to do so. If you can't find it, create it. Create an environment where you can be your true self. Create an environment where you can be whole.
