I hate to break it to you, my fellow millennial. But sometimes (or maybe most of the time), passion just isn’t enough.
Just because you are passionate about something doesn’t mean you’ll be successful doing it.
I can be a passionate singer. But, no one would really like to hear me sing.
There are also times when the passion isn’t there. Passion is an emotion. Sometimes, the emotions are there, most of the time, they’re not. Over time, passion also fades away. Will you stop doing work that matters when that happens?
Passion is just one part of the success equation.
There’s still another one: helpfulness.
When what you’re doing is helpful to others, they’ll keep coming back for more.
You can also use it as a fuel when passion finally fades away.
But, that requires being outward-focused. It requires working and living not only for yourself, but also for others.
It requires making a shift from being self-centered to being selfless.
Will you make that shift?
The next time you don’t know what to do next (at work or in your life), don’t ask, “What do I want to do next?”
Ask others, “What do you want from me?”
